Discord rules generator
Pick your server type, the rules you need and a tone, then paste the result into your rules channel. Discord markdown, plain text, emoji style or embed JSON, already split into messages under 2,000 characters.
Your rules
16 rules, 1 message(s)
A Discord message holds 2,000 characters. Longer rule sets are split between two rules, never in the middle of one: post the messages in order.
Make members accept these rules
Posting rules doesn’t mean people read them. With Toscio, new members apply in a native Discord form before they get access, and the form can check the rules:
- A required checkbox: “I have read and accept the server rules.”
- A graded rules quiz: 3 or 4 single-choice questions and a pass mark. Below the mark, the application is declined automatically; the applicant sees their score, never the correct answers.
- Both are in the free plan, like the role given automatically on acceptance.
- Free plan
- 14 days of Premium free
- No credit card
Step-by-step setup in the Discord rules template guide.
Quiz questions from your rules
Generated from the rules you picked, in the rules language. Add them as choice questions in the Toscio form editor, then click the correct answer.
Required checkbox question: ☐ I have read and accept the server rules. Single-choice question 1: Is NSFW content allowed in your name, avatar or status? - No, never ✅ correct answer - Yes, behind a spoiler tag - Yes, outside public channels Single-choice question 2: Where can you advertise your own server or channel? - In any channel, once a day - Nowhere, unless the staff allow it ✅ correct answer - In other members’ DMs Single-choice question 3: Someone posts another member’s real name and address. What do you do? - Repost it so others know - Nothing, it’s not your business - Report it to the staff without sharing it ✅ correct answer Single-choice question 4: You disagree with a moderator’s decision. What should you do? - Contact the staff privately ✅ correct answer - Argue about it in the main chat - Create another account to keep talking
How to post your rules
- Create a read-only channel. Add a
#ruleschannel at the top of your server and turn off “Send Messages” for @everyone. - Paste the messages in order. Copy each message with its button and send it. Each one fits within Discord’s 2,000-character limit.
- Set it as your rules channel. On a Community server, pick it as the “Rules or Guidelines Channel” in Server Settings and turn on rules screening.
- Keep a copy. Save the share link or the .txt file: you can edit and repost your rules in seconds after a change or a raid.

The 5 essential Discord rules
If you only keep five rules, keep these. They cover most moderation problems, whatever your server is about.
- Be respectful. No insults, harassment or hate speech. Every other rule builds on this one.
- No spam or ads. No message floods, mass pings or self-promotion without permission, in channels or in DMs.
- Keep content appropriate. No NSFW or shocking content outside age-restricted channels, and spoilers behind spoiler tags.
- Protect privacy. No sharing personal information, yours or anyone else’s, and no doxxing.
- Follow Discord’s rules. Discord’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines apply on every server, including the minimum age of 13.
How many rules should a server have?
Between 8 and 15 rules is enough for most servers. Members read a short list; a list of 40 rules gets skipped, and each extra rule makes the others weaker.
Start with the essentials, then add what your community really needs: spoiler tags for a fandom, an LFG channel for a gaming server, academic honesty for a study group, practice times for an esports team. Put channel-specific rules in each channel’s topic rather than in the main list.
The penalty ladder
Rules work better when members know what happens if they break them. Most servers use the same four steps, warning, timeout, kick and ban, and the most serious offenses skip straight to a ban.
| Offense | First time | Second time | After that |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spam, off-topic, mild insults | Warning | Timeout (1 hour) | Timeout (1 day) or kick |
| Harassment, hate speech, NSFW | Timeout (1 day) | Ban | Ban |
| Scams, doxxing, raids, ban evasion | Ban | — | — |
Tick “Add the penalty ladder” in the generator to add it under your rules, and add an appeal link so banned members have a fair way back.
Questions
What is the 13 rule on Discord?
Discord requires every user to be at least 13 years old, or older where local law sets a higher age. Accounts of younger users are banned by Discord when reported. Tick the “Discord ToS” category to add this rule to your list.
Can I copy these rules?
Yes. The rules are free to copy, edit and use on any server, with no credit needed. Rewrite them in your own words if you like: rules that sound like your server get read more.
How many rules should a server have?
Between 8 and 15 for most servers. Untick categories, or single rules under “Choose rules”, until the list fits in one or two messages.
Does it use Discord markdown?
Yes. The default output uses Discord markdown: a ## heading, numbered rules in bold and > quotes for explanations. The emoji style uses -# subtext, and the plain text tab has no formatting at all.
What about the 2,000-character limit?
A Discord message holds 2,000 characters (4,000 with Nitro). The generator counts characters as you go and splits long rule sets into several messages, always between two rules, with a copy button for each. Embeds have their own limits: 25 fields and 6,000 characters per message.
How do I make members accept the rules?
On a Community server, turn on rules screening: new members agree to the rules before they can talk. To check that they read them, have them apply with Toscio and add a required “I accept the rules” checkbox and a graded rules quiz, both on the free plan.
How do I make aesthetic rules?
Pick the “Emoji style” tab: each rule gets its own emoji, divider lines and small -# subtext for explanations. For a card look, use the Embed JSON tab with a webhook tool: the rules show up in a colored embed.
Does NSFW content break Discord’s Terms of Service?
Not by itself. Discord allows adult content only in channels marked age-restricted, and never in server icons, banners, emojis or invites. Many servers simply forbid NSFW everywhere: the strict tone of the generator does that.
