Trial moderator on Discord: how to run a trial period for new mods
A trial moderator period is the safest way to add someone to your staff: they get a trial role for a few weeks, you see how they handle real situations, then you decide on the full role. This guide shows how to run one on Discord, with a rules quiz that grades itself and notes your team can follow. With Toscio, the trial period is free: the first Accept gives the trial moderator role, the second the final role.
Why a trial period for a new mod
A written application shows how someone answers questions. It doesn't show how they act at 11 pm when a raid starts, or when a friend breaks a rule. A trial period fills that gap:
- Lower stakes for everyone. You don't have to be sure from a form alone, and the new mod can learn without pressure.
- Limited permissions while they learn. Give the trial role timeout and delete permissions, but keep bans and role management for full staff.
- A clear end date. Say upfront how long the trial lasts and what you'll look at, so the decision doesn't feel arbitrary.
- A mentor. Pair each trial mod with an experienced moderator they can ask before acting.
Set it up with a stage
- Run
/toscio setupand pick the Staff recruitment template. For role, choose the final role, for example @Moderator. - Open the form in the dashboard at app.toscio.com and go to the "If accepted" section of the form editor.
- Turn on "Add a stage before final acceptance" and give it a "Stage name", like "Trial".
- In "Roles given at this stage", pick @Trial Mod. In "Direct message for the stage", write what the trial involves (see the template below).
- Set "Remind staff after (days)": from 1 to 90, or 0 for no reminder. The reminder is posted once, in reply to the card in the staff channel.
What happens next:
- The card's green button becomes Approve → Trial. One click gives @Trial Mod and sends the DM; the application stays pending.
- At the end of the trial, the second Accept gives the acceptance roles (@Moderator) and removes the stage roles.
- Declining at the stage removes its roles too, so a trial that doesn't work out ends cleanly.
A form has one stage. Exact labels for every setting are in the form editor docs.
A graded quiz on your rules
Before anyone reaches the trial, check they know your rules. Toscio grades choice questions on its own:
- In "Advanced settings", open "Graded quiz" and turn on "Grade the choice questions".
- On each choice question, click the "Correct answer".
- Set the "Pass mark", in % of correct answers.
- "If the quiz is failed": decline automatically. The score is sent to the applicant, and the wait before applying again applies.
- "If the quiz is passed": let staff decide, or accept automatically, which moves the application straight to the trial stage.
Applicants never see the correct answers, neither in Discord nor on the web form. Example questions for a typical rules channel:
- A member keeps posting the same link. First step? Delete it and time them out / Ban them / Ignore it
- Who can see staff discussions? Only the staff team / Your friends / Anyone who asks
- You're not sure a ban is justified. You… Ask a senior moderator / Ban anyway / Do nothing
- Two members argue in public chat. You… Calm it down and move it to DMs / Mute both for a week / Join in
To write your own, start from our server rules template.
Follow the trial
- 📝 Note. Every staff member can add an internal note to the card, up to 1,000 characters, 50 notes per application. Use it as the trial log: "handled a spam wave well", "forgot to log a timeout". The applicant never receives it.
- History. If the person applied before, the card shows "🔁 Previous applications on this form" with the outcome and date.
- Staff access to the dashboard. Mentors with the form's staff role can log in at app.toscio.com without Manage Server. They only see the "Applications" page for their forms, so they can read the notes and decide without admin rights.
Decide together
With Premium, staff can vote 👍 For or 👎 Against on the card. With a stage, reaching the For threshold first moves the application to the trial; votes then start again from zero for the final decision. See reviewing applications.
Template: 5 questions and a stage message
Five application questions aimed at a trial (the full list of 58 is in our staff application questions):
- How many hours a week can you moderate during the trial?
- Which channels would you watch first, and why?
- Have you moderated a Discord server before? Which one?
- A member insults you in public chat. What do you do?
- What do you want to learn during your trial?
Message for the stage, to paste in "Direct message for the stage":
Welcome to your trial! For the next 3 weeks you have the @Trial Mod role: you can time out members and delete messages, but leave bans to full staff. Your mentor is @Mentor: ask them whenever you're unsure. Log every action in #staff-log. At the end, the team decides together and you'll get an answer here.

Questions
What is a trial moderator?
A new moderator who has been accepted on probation: they get a trial role, like @Trial Mod, with fewer permissions than full staff, for a few weeks. At the end, the team either gives them the full role or ends the trial.
How long should a trial period for Discord mods be?
Two to four weeks is a common range: long enough to see a few busy evenings and at least one tricky situation, short enough that the new mod doesn't feel stuck. With Toscio you can have staff reminded after any delay from 1 to 90 days.
How do I run a trial period for new Discord mods?
Give accepted applicants a trial role first, with limited permissions, and decide on the full role after a set time. With Toscio, turn on the stage before final acceptance: the first Accept gives @Trial Mod and sends a DM, the second Accept gives the full role and removes the trial one.
Can a bot auto-decline applicants who fail the rules quiz?
Yes. Toscio grades the choice questions you mark with a correct answer. Set a pass mark in %, and choose to decline automatically if the quiz is failed: the applicant gets their score, never the correct answers, and the wait before applying again applies.
Is a trial moderator stage free with Toscio?
Yes. The stage before acceptance and the graded quiz are part of Toscio's free plan, like staff notes, applicant history and staff access to the dashboard. Staff votes with an automatic decision are Premium.
